President’s Lecture: Leisure, Learning, and Happiness

Join Dr. Zena Hitz as she explores how we conceptualize learning, success, and fulfillment. We often think of learning in terms of concrete goals: to get a degree, job, income, comfort, and stability for ourselves and for our families. This is an important part of learning, but not the focal point. Liberal learning is for freedom—in failure as well as success. In freedom, we are someone—someone kind, generous, thoughtful, or wise. We have to cultivate leisure whatever our path in life, so that the short view of our achievement doesn’t obscure the long view of our fulfillment.
