Save CR Heritage J.E. Halvorson House Dedication & Walking Tours Day 2
- 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. -
- $0 – $10
- All Ages
Cedar Rapids Historian Mark Stoffer Hunter will lead neighborhood walking tours as part of a two-day event, as Save CR Heritage dedicates the J.E. Halvorson House, 606 Fifth Ave. SE, in memory of a beloved board member who was killed when his car was struck in 2020. The public is invited to attend.
Formerly used as the Teacher Store, the early-1900s home was at risk of being demolished before owner Mercy Medical Center agreed to sell the building to the nonprofit for $1. Save CR Heritage volunteers and contractors have spent the past months repairing the building, located next to Kathy’s Pies.
The home will eventually be moved, and in the meantime, will be used for workshops on window repair and other skills, and to connect homeowners with vintage doors, windows and other items salvaged from buildings destined for demolition.
Free tours of the 1905-built home will be offered, with donations accepted for the building relocation fund. Annual Save CR Heritage memberships will be available for $25. Members receive one free walking tour and salvage discounts.
