Event Description

Hour - 9-5 M-F 10-4 Sat

The exhibit includes a large display of the uniforms, equipment, and memorabilia of The University of Iowa Scottish Highland Bagpipe Band that began in 1937 as an all male ROTC unit. The band was changed to an all female band when the men were called to serve in World War II. The men performed at the 1939 World's Fair and the women in 1964 World's Fair, both in New York City. They also marched at Iowa football games and parades throughout the United States. The women also performed in various cities in Scotland and England before traveling to the European continent. An interactive kiosk presents a timeline of film clips of the organization and visitors are welcomed to the Hall of Fame by a fully kilted Herky the Hawk.

A book titled The State University of Iowa Scottish Highlanders - A TREASURE IN THE HEARTLAND authored by Heather Adamson Stockman, the daughter of the original and long time director William Adamson, as well as a former Scottish Highlanders dancer, is available by contacting hastockman46@gmail.com.
