Event Description

About the Event

Which plants must grow in your yard? Do you often encounter a plant that, for some unexplainable reason, makes you always pause and ponder it for a while?

In The Botany of Desire, Michael Pollan describes how the allure of certain plants causes us to fall in love with them. During this class, we will learn the physical and magical ways plants entice us to help them thrive. We will take this knowing into our gardens and parks to understand how we can better care for our plant friends, but more importantly, how they can care for us.

You are invited no matter your level of gardening experience. All are welcome.

Yummy snacks generously provided by New Pioneer Co-op.

We realize the class may be a little late in the day.  The first hour covers core concepts and the last half hour is hands-on practice. Please feel free to leave after the first hour if you need to get home.

  • Clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty.
  • A notebook and a pen/pencil for writing and drawing.
  • Gloves and a hat (optional).
  • A cup for tea (optional).
  • A list of plants that you love (optional).

Sliding scale fee: $25 - $0, based upon your access to resources.

This class is a part of a 4-class series. There is a 20% discount for registering for the series. (See separate Series: Grow Magical Garden Memories registration).

Backyard Abundance members receive a 10% discount.

We need a minimum of 10 attendees to host the class. Please invite friends and family to ensure the event happens as scheduled. We would love to meet your loved ones.

Taught by Fred Meyer, permaculture designer, Master Gardener and Grandma’s gardening apprentice. Fred’s years of gardening and garden design experience will help answer your questions about specific challenges and opportunities in your garden.

We meet at the Edible Classroom on the south side of the Robert A. Lee Community Center, 220 South Gilbert Street, Iowa City.

The event is held outside. Masks are optional. We will try to maintain 6' distancing.

This class was developed in collaboration with many community partners using grant funding from the Johnson County Community Foundation and the Roy A. Hunt Foundation. It would not be possible without these sponsors and supporters. Please frequent these generous organizations to thank them for donations of time, materials and funds.
