Event Description

On Saturday, June 18, the AAMI will commemorate Juneteenth with its free, annual outdoor festival at NewBo City Market. The newest federal holiday, Juneteenth celebrates the freedom of enslaved people. Since 1865, Juneteenth has been celebrated to honor the African Americans who built this nation.

Presented by Cargill, the AAMI’s annual Juneteenth celebration returns this year with a day full of free programming. Join us at NewBo City Market for a proclamation from Mayor O’Donnell, DJ Commando, MC Jemar Lee, stage performances, community vendors, face painting, and more. Stage talent will include comedy, songs, spoken word, dance. Featured statewide artists like Antonio “Tone da boss” Chalmers, Robert Miley, Jr., Destiny “Tru” Cyrus, Tevin Jones, the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church men’s choir, Emmett Philips, Day Peace and more.

In addition to presenting sponsor, Cargill, event sponsors and partners include Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust, Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission, City of Iowa City, Collins Community Credit Union, Skogman Companies, and The Gazette.
