Event Description

The Linn County League of Women Voters is hosting a Law Enforcement “Fireside Chat” Thursday, October 20 regarding the November ballot issue adding specific language to the Iowa Constitution regarding the right to bear arms. Linn County Sheriff Brian Gardner and Linn County Attorney Nick Maybanks will discuss the issue and attorney Steve Pace will moderate the event from 6- 7 p.m. at the Cedar Rapids Public Library, 450 5th Ave SE, Cedar Rapids, 52401. The event is free and open to the public.

Voters this November 8 will see the following Ballot Measure:

“Summary: Provides that the right of the people of Iowa to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. The sovereign state of Iowa affirms and recognizes the right to keep and bear arms as a fundamental right. Any and all restrictions of this right shall be subject to strict scrutiny.”

Full Text: Article I of the Constitution of the State of Iowa is amended by adding the following new section: Right to keep and bear arms. Sec. 1A. The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. The sovereign state of Iowa affirms and recognizes this right to be a fundamental individual right. Any and all restrictions of this right shall be subject to strict scrutiny.”

Voters have the option to vote “yes” or “no” to add this language to the Iowa Constitution. If passed, this amendment would impact any future Iowa gun control laws challenged in court as a test to decide if a law should stand or be struck down. The November 2022 Ballot Measure asks if the judicial test should be evaluated with the test of “strict scrutiny.”

The forum will be conducted by league members and community volunteers under LWV forum guidelines as part of its voter education program. The League of Women Voters Linn County is a non-profit volunteer political organization that neither supports or opposes any candidate or political party, encourages citizen participation in government and is open to everyone 16 years and older.
