Event Description

Fefu and Her Friends

by María Irene Fornés

Directed by Juliana Frey-Méndez

March 10th - April 2nd

Revolutions start when women come together. This seminal play of the 20th century explores feminism and sexuality through the intimate lives of eight New England women in the 1930s. In a unique twist, the central act of the play will be presented “promenade” style to take full advantage of the flexibility of Riverside’s new downtown home.

“Fornés’ groundbreaking and award-winning plays are celebrated for their powerful female characters, linguistic exactitude, culturally diverse narratives and theatrical experimentation. Her works often explore female characters searching for expression, empowerment and education.” - The Fornés Institute

Riverside’s production will be supplemented by two post-show talkbacks. The first will be University of Iowa professor Miriam Gilbert in conversation with the director and cast following the matinee on 3/12. The second will be director Juliana Frey-Méndez and University of Iowa professor Jen Buckley on Fornés work and legacy following the 3/26 matinee performance.
