Love & Life: Red Cedar Chamber Music with Akwi Nji
- 2 - 3 p.m.
- All Ages
We're opening our 23rd season with one of Iowa’s cutting-edge performers, spoken word artist Akwi Nji. Through three works for violin, cello and spoken word, we explore love through the stages of life. The title work of the program was commissioned by board member Tom Carroll as a gift to his wife Patrice on their 40thanniversary. Co-written by Red Cedar composer in residence Stephen Cohn and guest artist Akwi Nji, Love & Lifeis a marriage of words and music, taking us on a journey of love.
The program includes two other works featuring Nji’s readings. Iowa composer Michael Kimber wrote a new duet for us that we are pairing with “Long Dance, Slow Revolution,” a 1997 poem by Cedar Rapids poet Julie Hanson. Conversations, a virtuoso duo by David Ott, was written in 1998 for the powerhouse couple and violin/cello duo, Jamie Laredo and Sharon Robinson. The work’s six movements each have evocative titles- Serious Thoughts, A Difficult Issue, Picky! Picky! Picky!, Two Views on the Same Subject, Chat at the Fireplace, and Differing Opinions. In early October, Red Cedar and Nji will spend a week at Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, inspiring students to write their own verses in response to the movements. Selected responses will be read by Nji at each of our 13 performances.
