ABOUT THE EVENT:

First Thursdays in NewBo is a free ongoing monthly art event created to showcase new gallery exhibits in NewBo by local, regional and national artists-- in various visual arts and mediums.  This monthly event will take place from 5-7:30pm every first Thursday in galleries located just blocks away from each other, within the NewBo district of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.   Participating galleries with monthly ongoing opening for First Thursdays in NewBo include:  iCCGS, Black Earth Art Gallery and CSPS. 

Art enthusiasts attending this event may walk to each gallery to see new art exhibits in these spaces.  In additional to gallery openings, participating galleries may also have artist’s lectures and demos and receptions for the artists. This event strives to expose participants to various mediums of art as well as the artists who created them.  These events are open to the public and free of charge. 

For art collectors, participating galleries will also have items available for sale.  In addition, information will be made available for upcoming shows, musical events and classes/workshops in the NewBo area.

The variety in the gallery space during these events could include: historic building space, commercial gallery space and an unfinished studio space. The various mediums showcased to the public could include: pictures, drawings, video, sound, installation, performance, interactive art, new media art or sculptures by individual artists, groups of artists or collections of a specific form of art.

New Bohemia Arts & Entertainment District is a vibrant urban neighborhood model for historic preservation and economic development in the Midwest, a destination for both residents and visitors. Building on its unique history, the District is a dynamic arts and culture venue that provides interesting, authentic and enriching experiences that complement the downtown with a variety of shopping, dining, arts and cultural entertainment opportunities that cannot be found elsewhere.

Cedar Rapids has a long history of cultivating and promoting young artists like Grant Wood, Marvin Cone and Mauricio Lasansky.   The New Bohemia District is a historical area that includes the NewBo City Market, music venue, many restaurants, bars, artists’ studios and art galleries. 

About the Participating Galleries and upcoming Artists:

ICCGS

Iowa Ceramics Center and Glass Studio is located in the historic Cherry Building across the street from NewBo Market. The Cherry Building houses art galleries, artist studios, artisan shops, light manufacturing companies, and businesses. Come and discover New Bo at it's best.

Iowa Ceramics Center and Glass Studio's mission is to promote understanding, appreciation and professional development in the ceramic and glass arts. The Center's founding organization, Iowa Art Works, Inc., is dedicated to providing a place where creativity and community meet.

Iowa Ceramics Center and Glass Studio offers facilities and a wide variety of programs in both Clay and Warm Glass – for all ages and ability levels. While the Center is open to all, its primary focus is to serve three major constituencies:

CSPS

Legion Arts is an award-winning, Cedar Rapids nonprofit dedicated to the creation, presentation, understanding and impact of contemporary art. Based at CSPS, a restored landmark building on the edge of downtown Cedar Rapids, Legion Arts presents cutting edge art, music theatre, film and other events at a variety of venues; supports young artists, experimental art forms and new idea.

Black Earth Gallery

Black Earth Gallery is a contemporary art gallery located in the heart of the New Bohemia Arts & Entertainment District in Cedar Rapids, IA.  Black Earth Gallery specializing in underrepresented professional and emerging artists.   Owner, Anne Stamats, is an Art Consultant and an Art Rep for her stable of artists. Black Earth Gallery uses juried shows to expand their repertoire of artists used for corporate, business and personal art consulting projects.
