Gilded Pear Gallery is pleased to present Fresh Paint, a three-person exhibit of new works by abstract painters: Marcia Wegman, Corrine Smith and introducing Karl Haglund.
Most known for her pastel landscapes, the gallery will be exhibiting Marcia Wegman’s abstract body of work for the first time. She has exhibited widely throughout the Midwest and has received numerous awards and distinctions for her paintings. When speaking about her work, Wegman states: “Abstract painting, for me, is an exciting adventure; a journey with an unknown destination.” She uses a unique synthetic paper called “yupo” which allows the paint to be pushed, pulled and built up into harmonious textures.
Corrine Smith, currently Adjunct Assistant Professor of Art and Graphic Design at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL, will be showcasing her mixed media works on canvas. Smith’s works can be found in corporate and private collections internationally. She creates her paintings by collaging handmade papers into the paint and composing with the formal principles of design. The end results are complex layers and patterns throughout each piece.
With a background in Anthropology, Karl Haglund fuels his creative practice with this knowledge. He states that it, “…tends to inform much of the work; considering origins of people, places and things, breaking down what is obvious and trying to relate what is strange. I try to capture the busied tension created by so many people in such a small geographic space; an expression of my small town Iowa upbringing that yearned for a larger life.” He uses large canvases, mixed mediums, and bold mark making to create a world of lines and color for the viewer to explore.
