"Achieving the Impossible: Becoming a Catalyst for Change"

Teacher, educational activist, and founder of Freedom Writers Foundation, Erin Gruwell will speak at Luther College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20 in Valders Hall of Science Room 206.

The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission. Gruwell will be available after the lecture for discussion and a book signing. Gruwell will also be speaking to the teachers of Decorah High School and Middle School the morning of Feb. 20.

Inspired by Anne Frank and Zlata Filipovic, who lived in war-torn Sarajevo, Gruwell fosters an educational philosophy that values and promotes diversity. She encourages her students to rethink rigid beliefs about themselves and others, reconsider their daily decisions and ultimately re-chart their own futures. Many of her students have overcome hardships such as teen pregnancy, drugs and violence to become aspiring college students, published writers and catalysts for change. They published a book "The Freedom Writers Diary," in homage to the civil rights activists, The Freedom Riders. The book is the basis for the 2007 film "Freedom Writers," in which Gruwell is played by Hilary Swank.

As a teacher, Gruwell channeled her classroom experience toward a larger cause. She founded the Freedom Writers Foundation through which she teaches teachers around the country how to implement her innovative lesson plans into their own classrooms. She has recently published a book about these methods, "The Freedom Writers Diary Teacher's Guide," and all proceeds from the book go directly to the Freedom Writers Foundation.

Gruwell and her students have appeared on several television shows including Oprah, Prime Time Live with Connie Chung, Barbara Walters' The View, and Good Morning America. They have also won dozens of awards, including the Spirit of Anne Frank Award.

Gruwell is a graduate of University of California Irvine, where she was awarded the Lauds and Laurels Distinguished Alumni Award. She received her masters degree and teaching credentials from California State University Long Beach where she was honored as a distinguished alumna by the School of Education.

There will be a screening of “Freedom Writers” in Valders Hall of Science Room 206 at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 13. This event is also open to the public with no charge for admission.

A national liberal arts college with an enrollment of 2,005, Luther offers an academic curriculum that leads to the Bachelor of Arts degree in more than 60 majors and pre-professional programs. Religion vs. Science? Don't Believe It

Popular culture, public discourse, and the media are pervaded by endlessly reiterated claims that science and religion are incompatible. But do they represent antagonistic worldviews, the one based on reason and evidence, the other on faith and the rejection of evidence? This self-serving misrepresentation depends on mistaken assumptions about what the natural sciences can and cannot explain, as well as on a cartoonish view of "religion" that makes no distinctions among different religious traditions or theological claims. This lecture will show how the assumption that science and religion are inherently conflictual is mistaken—and how properly understood, whatever is true about the natural world does not and cannot conflict with true religion.

Dr. Brad Gregory | Professor of History and Dorothy G. Griffin Collegiate Chair, University of Notre Dame

This event is a part of the 2019 Spring Lecture Series: Faith/Reason/Science: Friends or Foes?

More Info: https://www.mtmercy.edu/faith-reason
2/21/197:00 p.m.Mount Mercy University, Chapel of MercyCedar Rapids -

UI Dance presents Dancers in Company: Taking Ground

Presented by the University of Iowa Department of Dance

Dancers in Company Home Concert
February 21, 22, 23 at 8:00 p.m.
Space Place Theater, 101 North Hall

Dancers in Company, the University of Iowa’s premiere touring ensemble, presents their hugely popular home concert. Now in its 35th year, the company’s repertory explores the theme of “taking ground.” Curated by company directors Jessica Anthony and Alex Bush, this evening of dancing engages with current and historical social and political movements that bring marginalized voices forward, as well as abstract and aesthetic investigations of equity and space. UI Dance students will perform a thrilling concert and use workshops and public discussions to facilitate community conversations throughout Iowa. Don’t miss the only UI home performances from this company of talented and exciting dancers and choreographers.

Dancers in Company: Taking Ground home concert performances will include the following works:

Borrowed Earth
Choreography by Alex Bush, in collaboration with the dancers
Borrowed Earth was developed using material created in weekly course-meetings with the entire company during fall 2018. As we explored the theme of “taking ground,” we engaged in movement research around ideas of identity and position, engaging empathy through performance, and communal choice/change. This work offers insight into our investigation of these themes.

Pillow talk: We are here again
Choreography by Christopher-Rasheem McMillan, in deep collaboration with the dancers

Sonata for Anyone Who Cares to Listen
Choreography by Kristin Marrs
Sonata for Anyone Who Cares to Listen explores the myriad sources of the choreographer’s own identity as a dancer and performer. The lighthearted narrative follows the poignant journey of a young explorer navigating the stage for the first time, and the characters she encounters introduce her to the magical world of the theater. The story simultaneously reminds both the audience and those behind the scenes not to take themselves too seriously.

Gabriel
Choreography by Armando Duarte, in collaboration with the dancers
Gabriel is based on composition by internationally known British artist Peter Gabriel. Using a colorful musical background (composed and performed by Peter Gabriel himself along with various international artists of different ethnicities), the choreography is inspired by the lyrics and soundscapes provided by his music.

I want to be, more aw-ware, nowww (lift)
Choreography by Tony Orrico, in collaboration with the dancers
I want to be, more aw-ware, nowww (lift) is a choreographic interpretation of Orrico’s transcription of Tristan Perich’s 1-Bit Symphony (Movements 1 and 2). As Perich describes it, 1-Bit Symphony is not a conventional recording, but rather, an object that "performs its music live" when it is turned on. This beautifully dense arrangement is stored on a microchip and housed autonomously in a cd jewel case; when plugged into a speaker, it manifests sound. This activation of Perich's 'live' sound (due to logistics, recorded sound will be used for Space Place performances), and the dancers’ recall of a deeply embodied movement score, both seem to echo how the performativity of objects/forms/concepts rely on our engagement to sustain their life-force.

P.O.V.
Choreography by Charlotte Adams, in collaboration with the dancers
P.O.V. formally investigates an intricately woven dance quartet viewed from numerous perspectives highlighting the dancer’s finely tuned cooperative abilities.

Human
Choreography by Brian Enos

This performance contains adult content and language.

The Feralings

Ralph Waldo Emerson. Diesel. Morning glories. AM radio. These all influence Iowa acoustic roots trio The Feralings, as do the gently sloping landscapes of the Iowa countryside and the sound of tornado sirens squealing and the rumble of trucks on I-80. Their songwriting reflects parenthood, friendship, imperfection, magic, and a big love for storytelling, as well as the folk, bluegrass, jazz, alt-country, Americana, gospel, and roots that form each member’s musical DNA.

In October of 2018 The Feralings released their long-awaited debut EP, titled simply “The Feralings”. It was recorded over the course of several years, as the band navigated parenthood, life changes, and personal struggles, and it showcases the power and intimacy of the band’s enthralling live performances.
2/22/198:00 p.m.The Famous MockingbirdMarion -
