Cynthia Greig: "Proximity"

Michigan artist Cynthia Greig’s installation at Cornell College's Peter Paul Luce Gallery in McWethy Hall will use photography and video to examine the difference between what we see and what we think we see. While we spend our days glancing at the unending stream of images flickering from the palms of our hands—sometimes even coveting another’s life as seen through the lens—Greig embraces the futility of photography to ever truly satisfy as a surrogate for the real. The show runs Jan. 20–March 24, 2023. Gallery hours are Monday - Friday 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Sunday 2-4 p.m.

2023-03-21 16:00:00 -05003/21/239:00 a.m.First Presbyterian ChurchMount Vernon -

Art Exhibit: "Tell Me Everything" by Thérèse Murdza

"Tell Me Everything": Main Floor Exhibition

Using colors and shapes inspired by Murdza's synesthetic experience, paintings created engage and enliven where we work, rest, and gather. Since 2001, writer turned visual artist, Thérèse Murdza has applied paints and pencils to create large, multi-paneled works on canvas, and smaller works on canvas and paper. This exhibition showcases the signature bright, richly textured paintings. "In this newest work, I’m mapping and marking time; exploring the ways we count (and count on) the days. I'm particularly curious about our calendars, and how we use them to imagine a future."

www.gildedpeargallery.com/tell-me-everything
3/21/2310:00 a.m.Gilded Pear GalleryCedar Rapids -

Built This Way: Architecture in Art

February 4-May 14, 2023

Art and architecture are often thought of as related but separate artistic forms. There are however, situations when the two overlap: murals in buildings, art museums as architectural statements, etc. Architecture sometimes appears in art—setting the scene in paintings, drawings, photographs, and prints. Sometimes architecture is the subject of the artwork. This exhibition looks at the appearance of architecture in art from the museum’s collection, exploring the many ways in which architecture plays an important and pivotal role.

2023-03-21 16:00:00 -05003/21/2312:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -

Threshold Conversations with Prairiewoods: Equanimity

Whether you’re living through significant personal transitions or navigating a world reshaping itself faster than ever, you are invited to join a yearlong conversation about how to make change more trustworthy. Throughout the year, you can join monthly online conversations focused on one of the ten threshold skills featured in Karen Hering’s book, Trusting Change. Karen will present selected content from her book and offer a focusing question or prompt and silent time for writing or reflection. After reflection, we’ll move into small groups to share how we each experience and engage that month’s threshold skill in the context of change. You are invited to join all the monthly online offerings or attend selectively, based on your time and interest. Though the conversations will be enriched by reading along in Trusting Change, participation will be accessible even if you are unable to do the reading. Additional in-person weekend retreats, on the spring and fall equinoxes, will offer a deeper dive into the material for those who are interested and able to attend (at Prairiewoods March 17–19 and at the Christine Center Sept. 22–24). Wherever you are in your journey through change, you’re invited to join these monthly conversations. Your voice will bring wisdom for others, while theirs may offer just the perspective you need on your threshold. Prairiewoods is pleased to partner with our sister organization, the Christine Center, and with Karen Hering to bring you this online program series. The cost is $15 per session. Please register for each session you plan to attend. For more information or to register, contact Prairiewoods at www.Prairiewoods.org or 319-395-6700.
2023-02-14 20:30:00 -06003/21/237:00 p.m.Prairiewoods Franciscan Spirituality CenterHiawatha -

Week two’s session moves the story through the latter decades of the twentieth century and up to today.
