Virtual Thursday Forum: Scenic Long-Distance Hikes in the United Kingdom

Floyd Sandford, Emeritus Professor of Biology

In the United Kingdom, walking is one of the most popular recreational activities, and because of this, England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are excellent destinations for hikers. Because of liberal rules for rights of way, U.K. citizens and visitors alike are permitted easy access to most of the countryside. A vast network of public footpaths and national trails allows day ramblers or long-distance hikers to experience beautiful and dramatic coastal scenery and lovely countryside with attractive villages of thatched-roof cottages, gardens, historical monuments, abbey ruins and more. This two-session Thursday Forum will introduce two of the many scenic, long-distance hiking trails in the U.K. and take you on a virtual journey through the stunning landscapes of Scotland and England. In the first session, we will travel Scotland’s West Highland Way, one of the U.K.’s premier hiking experiences. Our journey begins in Milngavie (near Glasgow), follows the shores of Loch Lomond (one of the largest lakes in the U.K.) and continues north into the beautiful Scottish Highlands. In session two, we will explore one of England’s most popular long-distance hikes, the 102-mile-long Cotswold Way, which begins in the picturesque village of Chipping Camden and ends in the historic city of Bath. In addition to admiring the scenery, we will learn some historical background about our destinations, including the destruction of abbeys during the reign of Henry VIII and the impact of the English Civil War on Cotswold villages.
2021-02-25 23:58:00 -06002/25/2112:00 a.m.Coe CollegeCedar Rapids -
Art Exhibit: Picking up the Pieces

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA.— Gilded Pear Gallery is excited to present Picking Up The Pieces, a solo exhibition of new sculptures and paintings by local artist, Kimberlee Rocca.

Kimberlee Rocca is an artist and designer currently residing in Solon, Iowa. She studied Design, Printmaking, and Fiber Arts at The University of Iowa before earning her BFA in Metal Smithing in 1991. During her studies, Rocca was introduced to Foil Imaging, a unique process which combines traditional printmaking techniques with commercial foil printing processes. She has spent over 30 years exploring this innovated medium on paper, metal and now, in this exhibit, with salvaged construction materials. In addition to her studio work she is locally recognized for her custom home designs in the Iowa City area with unique architectural features, sculptural elements, and mosaic installations. Rocca’s two-dimensional works and sculptural installations are included in collections of The University of Iowa Museum and Hospital Permanent art collections, The University of Missouri St. Louis, and Kirkwood Community College among other private collections.

About this exhibition:

“My job sites are filled with a myriad of common, yet unusual materials that continually spark my imagination and wiggle their way into my fine art works” says Rocca. “My two creative disciplines are intertwined, and I have found that I can barely do one without the other.” Rocca says that walking the sites is a part of her process. “I regularly scavenge through the tossed materials to discover unused treasures. I have generated a collection of raw wood, beams, stone, tile, paper, plastic, and metals that I can process with abandon because I know there will always be more discards. Due to certain limitations in home building which require simplicity in most cases, my artistry tends to run in the opposite direction with bold colors, wild shapes and intentional imperfections.”

Gilded Pear Gallery is located at 808 Third Avenue SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52403. Americans in Paris: Grant Wood and Marvin Cone's 1920 Trip to Paris

For three months in the summer of 1920, Grant Wood and his best friend Marvin Cone traveled to Paris to see great art, soak up the sights, and to paint. This brief sojourn proved to be pivotal for both artists, enhancing their nascent interest in Impressionism and painting en plein air. While each artist discontinued painting in this style beyond the early 1930s, this trip to Paris (Wood’s first trip abroad, Cone’s second) was critical to their development. What the artists did, saw, and painted is carefully outlined in Cone’s meticulous and well-written diary of the trip, including where the artists painted on which days. As such, this diary enables the ability to date certain works to the precise date of creation. It also allows viewers to see how each artist depicted the same scene, often in very different terms.
2021-02-25 20:00:00 -06002/25/2112:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -

Seriously Funny: American Gothic Parodies

Grant Wood’s American Gothic is probably the world’s most parodied American painting, second only to Leonardo’s Mona Lisa. The fact that thousands of parodies of American Gothic exist, dating back several decades, speaks to the enduring inspiration of one of America’s greatest works of art. This exhibition—a first for the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art—will look at many of these parodies—some in the flesh on the gallery’s walls and many others digitally projected in an attempt to share the incredible reach of this iconic painting. From Bill and Hillary Clinton to Leonardo and Mona Lisa to RuPaul as male and female, these parodies speak to how this one painting serves as the basis for looking at various contemporary people and issues. Wood’s impactful 1930 painting continues to inspire “artists” of all ages and skills in a playful and humorous way that Wood would no doubt have applauded.
2021-02-26 16:00:00 -06002/26/2112:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -

2021-02-27 16:00:00 -06002/27/2110:00 a.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -
