oprah's south african school hit with another sex scandal
Oprah Winfrey was praised when she started an all-girls boarding school in South Africa last year, and rightly so, I think. Equality in all facets of Africa's education system is one of the things that could pull Africa out of its rut.
But things at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy School for Girls are not going well. Just months after the school was hit with its first sex scandal, seven students were suspended last week for sexually harassing their schoolmates, according to the Afrikaans on Sunday newspaper.
UsMagazine.com reports...
One 15-year-old "preyed" another student and urged her victims to lie to investigators about what happened, the paper reports.
Other girls were alleged to have been "intimidating others into partaking of inappropriate behaviors" at the $46 million school, according to the report.
A letter sent to one of the suspended girls' parents reportedly read: "You have been found guilty of physical contact of a sexual nature with another pupil on campus, harassment, bullying other girls on campus and of being dishonest by not telling investigators the whole truth."
Personally, I don't think Oprah should be blamed for this mess. It's the school administrators that need to oversee the school, and it's clear that they're not doing their jobs of preventing sexual harrassment from happening. They found out that it happened and dealt a good amount of discipline, but the admins still have to be able to stop this before it happens. If they don't, I wouldn't expect Oprah's school to be open much longer.
Oh, and what does "preyed" mean? Is that the equivalent of, like, a swirlie in American schools, or is it something much worse? It sounds worse.
