Threading the Needle: Fiber Art in Iowa
Threading the Needle: Fiber Art in Iowa October 3, 2026 – January 17, 2027 Fiber and textile arts have a rich legacy crafted over tens of thousands of years. In forms that clothed, adorned, comforted, and beautified, these fibers wove together history and culture, telling stories and documenting lives. Despite many years of lack of recognition from the mainstream art world, artists working in fiber built on the traditions of the medium, experimenting with new techniques, continually pushing the boundaries of materials, and exploring complex themes, including those of social issues and identity. Today, fiber continues to be a rich source of inspiration, sparking new and varied ideas for forms, styles, and techniques and allowing artists to demonstrate their immense skills. This all-Iowa, open call, juried art exhibition seeks to highlight the talented artists working in fiber in the state, drawing attention to the rich variety, conceptual prowess, and technical skill of their work, and to represent the continued legacy of the medium as it appears in Iowa. 2026-10-22 20:00:00 -0500

Grant Wood: from Farm Boy to American Icon Exhibition
Grant Wood: From Farm Boy to American Icon examines how the major events in Wood’s life are reflected in his art: building a house for himself, his mother, and his sister in Cedar Rapids; working for the Cedar Rapids Community School District; moving into his studio home at 5 Turner Alley; and his four trips to Europe during the 1920s. His last trip, when he traveled to Munich to help fabricate a large stained glass window for the Veterans Memorial Building, precipitated a major stylistic change from his American Impressionist paintings to the harder-edged style of his later work. 2026-10-22 20:00:00 -0500

Mauricio Lasansky: Master Printmaker Exhibition
The Museum is fortunate to be able to dedicate four galleries to the work of consummate printmaker, Mauricio Lasansky. Making prints for more than 65 years--first in his native Argentina, then in New York City, and for more than 55 years in Iowa City, Iowa--Lasansky's generous gift of prints in the 1980s and 1990s made it possible for the Museum to present a wide range of the artist's works, changing all four galleries every six months. Best known for large-scale prints in which he uses multiple plates and full ranges of color, Lasansky combines a spectrum of graphic techniques including etching, drypoint, aquatint, and engraving. Throughout his stylistic evolution, he created eloquent figural statements that are colorful, fresh, and spontaneous. 2026-10-23 16:00:00 -0500
