Righting a Wrong: Japanese Americans and World War II

Righting a Wrong: Japanese Americans and World War II, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian, examines the complicated history and impact of Executive Order 9066 that led to the incarceration of 75,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry and 45,000 Japanese nationals following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Young and old lived crowded together in hastily built camps, endured poor living conditions, and were under the constant watch of military guards for two and a half years. Meanwhile, brave Japanese American men risked their lives fighting for the United States. Some 40 years later, members of the Japanese American community led the nation to confront the wrong it had done—and urged Congress to make it right. Tomás and Charlie Lasansky: An Artistic Union

June 4, 2022-September 11, 2022

Tomás Lasansky, son of famed printmaker Mauricio Lasansky, and his wife Charlie have been lifelong artists living and working in Iowa City. Both specialize in figural art and have created extensive bodies of work depicting family members as well as famous writers, leaders, humanitarians, and artists of this and previous generations. Working in close proximity to each other, they no doubt influence each other in subtle yet significant ways. This exhibition, the first two-person exhibition of their work, explores the potential relationships that exist between their work. This exhibition is accompanied by a significant retrospective book, documenting each artist’s growth and development.
2022-08-14 16:00:00 -05008/14/2212:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -
National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week

Every year during the week before Thanksgiving, National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week offers an opportunity to engage and educate the community as we move individuals and families beyond homelessness. Each day, Shelter House hosts an event page and posts social media content that will feature educational, service, fundraising, and advocacy information. We plan for our 2022 daily events and activities to include panel discussions, a day of service, a soup luncheon, Foodies Fighting Homelessness, and a film screening.
2022-02-03 23:59:00 -060011/14/2212:00 a.m.Gloria Dei Lutheran ChurchIowa City
