Dick Pinney: Jack of All Trades

Dick Pinney (1924-1996) was a long-time favorite in the Cedar Rapids art scene. Accomplished in many media, this former creative director for Stamats Communications and Coe College vice president was perhaps most famous for the numerous carved wood assemblages that he created, usually as commissions for area business leaders. Paintings, drawings, ceramics, assemblages, constructions, games, and puppets were all part of Pinney’s repertoire. This exhibition, timed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Pinney’s passing in 1996, celebrates the artist’s diverse and wide-reaching artwork.
2022-05-22 16:00:00 -05005/22/2212:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -
Mauricio Lasansky: Master Printmaker

The Museum is fortunate to be able to dedicate four galleries to the work of consummate printmaker, Mauricio Lasansky. Making prints for more than 65 years--first in his native Argentina, then in New York City, and for more than 55 years in Iowa City, Iowa--Lasansky's generous gift of prints in the 1980s and 1990s made it possible for the Museum to present a wide range of the artist's works, changing all four galleries every six months. Best known for large-scale prints in which he uses multiple plates and full ranges of color, Lasansky combines a spectrum of graphic techniques including etching, drypoint, aquatint, and engraving. Throughout his stylistic evolution, he created eloquent figural statements that are colorful, fresh, and spontaneous.
2022-05-22 16:00:00 -05005/22/2212:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -
Grant Wood: From Farm Boy to American Icon

Grant Wood: From Farm Boy to American Icon offers an expansive look at Wood’s life and career though his art. Housed in one of our largest first-floor galleries, this installation reflects the depth of the CRMA’s Grant Wood collection as well as the great breadth of Woods’ career, cut tragically short by his death in 1942.
2022-05-22 16:00:00 -05005/22/2212:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -
Abstract Ideas: Abstract Art from the Collection

Culled from CRMA’s collection of works created after 1950, Abstract Ideas explores the potential of abstraction in the hands of post-World War II artists. In some cases, the subject matter has been only slightly abstracted, diverging only a little from the way they appear in nature. In other cases, artists have moved completely away from any recognizable object in pursuit of more emotional or intellectual goals. In all cases, however, artists maintained their relationship to and dialogue with the fundamental properties of art such as balance, form, line, color, and rhythm. Investigating the various degrees of abstraction found in modern paintings and sculpture, this exhibition presents a diverse group of works, each of which operates on different emotional and intellectual levels.
2022-05-22 16:00:00 -05005/22/2212:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -

The Collins Story: Live From The Moon & Moon Talk

Live from the Moon

On July 20, 1969, citizens of Earth gathered around televisions to witness the first man to step onto the moon’s surface and hear him say, “That’s one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind.”

The people of Collins Radio – based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa – played a key role in convincing the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) that a live television signal could be sent from the surface of the moon to Earth. Archival film footage shows how a painted moonscape and a replica of the Apollo capsule in a Cedar Rapids laboratory provided the backdrop for engineers to conduct television research, as Dr. Roger Pierce explains in the documentary.

Moon Talk

On December 21, 1968, Apollo 8 became the first manned space flight to leave Earth’s orbit and fly to the moon. For the next six days, the only link astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and Bill Anders would have to Earth was through equipment and a pioneering communication system developed by Collins Radio – based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa – and its subcontractors.

The documentary “Moon Talk" celebrates the men and women of the Collins Radio Company who had the vision, beyond the technology available in the 1960s, to create and manufacture a communication system to reach the moon. The documentary features rare 16-millimeter film footage and photos, and interviews with employees who recall working on the Apollo program.
2022-05-01 16:00:00 -05005/22/222:00 p.m.CSPS HallCedar Rapids -
