Read on the Rug
<p>Join us on the second Wednesday of each month in Iowa Hall at the UI Museum of Natural History for Read on the Rug. Ideal for families with kiddos aged 2-5, all are welcome to this free educational program. This program series was designed with our youngest museum lovers in mind. Come along as we build community and inspire a sense of wonder, curiosity, and respect for our natural and cultural worlds with stories, sing-alongs, and more in one of the most special places in Iowa City—<em>no matter your age</em>.</p><p>We'll meet in Iowa Hall. To access this space, use the main entrance on the east side of Macbride Hall or take the elevator with street level access just south of the main steps to the first floor and enter the south doors of Iowa Hall. Your museum staff and our program mascot Lumpy the Woolly Mammoth will see you there!</p><p><em>Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. <p>Join us on the last Sunday of each month for Sensory Friendly Night! This event is designed for families with members who experience sensory sensitivities, are on the autism spectrum, or who have any health needs that would make a quieter visit more enjoyable. Admission is free during Sensory Friendly Night, thanks to our friends at GreenState Credit Union.</p><p>We understand that the museum can be a bustling place. During Sensory Friendly Night, we provide adjusted sound levels and limit attendance to create a calmer environment. Families can explore the museum at their own pace. As always, we have KultureCity Sensory Inclusive™ signage to help you navigate exhibits and sensory bags available for checkout at the front desk. HalloWEEKEND 2023
<p>Join us for a weekend of not-too-scary Halloween activities that kids of all ages will enjoy! Bats, spiders, pumpkins, and more will take over our exhibits during the spooky season and families can check out special Halloween activities on October 28th, 29th, and 31st (closed Monday).</p><p><em><b>Pirate Pete’s Trick-or-Treasure Takeover:</b> Our mascot, Pete, is wearing his pirate costume for Halloween this year and taking over the museum with spooky, swashbuckling fun! Build a sea-worthy ship in the blue room, make a pizza with treacherous toppings, and deposit gold doubloons at the bank. We’ll also have pirate training activities, a scallywag scavenger hunt, sea shanty sing-alongs, and so much more! </em></p><p>Costumes are encouraged (but not required)! Disguise yourself from the pirates or join Pete’s band of buccaneers. Our team will join the fun as well, so keep an eye out for dinosaurs, superheroes, and other silly characters.</p><p>All activities are included with museum admission. Sensory Friendly Halloween
<p>Join us for a special Halloween-themed Sensory Friendly Night! As part of our HalloWEEKEND activities, this free event offers sensory-friendly activities in a calmer environment and opportunities to collect treats in our museum exhibits.</p><p>Costumes are encouraged (but not required!) as you look for our “treat stations” throughout the museum. In line with the Teal Pumpkin Project, all treats will be small non-food items to avoid allergy concerns.
