Abstract Ideas: Abstract Art from the Collection

Culled from CRMA’s collection of works created after 1950, Abstract Ideas explores the potential of abstraction in the hands of post-World War II artists. In some cases, the subject matter has been only slightly abstracted, diverging only a little from the way they appear in nature. In other cases, artists have moved completely away from any recognizable object in pursuit of more emotional or intellectual goals. In all cases, however, artists maintained their relationship to and dialogue with the fundamental properties of art such as balance, form, line, color, and rhythm. Investigating the various degrees of abstraction found in modern paintings and sculpture, this exhibition presents a diverse group of works, each of which operates on different emotional and intellectual levels.
2022-08-09 16:00:00 -05008/09/2212:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -
Special Cedar Rapids School Board meeting on Garfield Elementary Closure

Following a successful petition drive by Save CR Heritage and a coalition of school supporters, the closure of Garfield Elementary School was required to be added to the Cedar Rapids School Board agenda. The school district chose to have a special meeting, rather than include the item in its regular board meeting. Save CR Heritage wanted residents to have a voice in a decision as important as a school closure, which has far-reaching effects. The public is invited to speak at the meeting, but must arrive a few minutes early to sign in.
2022-05-12 18:15:00 -05005/16/225:30 p.m.Educational Leadership and Support CenterCedar Rapids -

Iowa City Genealogical Society

The May 21st program of the Iowa City Genealogical Society will be presented by Joel and Cathy Helman. The National Park Service includes the Lewelling home as an important site in the nation’s “Network to Freedom.” Lewelling, Garretson and their Quaker neighbors were strong willed abolitionists during the pioneer days of Iowa and the period leading to the Civil War. Dave and Cathy will also trace the ancestry of Garretson, Lewelling and Edwin Coppock, a co-conspirator with abolitionist John Brown.

The meeting will begin at 9:30 at the LDS Family History Library, 2730 Bradford Drive, Iowa City.
