National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
<p>Every year during the week before Thanksgiving, National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week offers an opportunity to engage and educate the community as we move individuals and families beyond homelessness. Each day, Shelter House hosts an event page and posts social media content that will feature educational, service, fundraising, and advocacy information. Make 3 Pairs of Earrings: Intro to Wirework through Kirkwood
<p>This is a great introduction to wirework. Two skills are learned and practiced—making a closed wrapped loop and making this loop into another closed loop. This set of skills allows you to make secure earrings, pendants, and chains. You will make earrings from Czech pressed glass, stone, fresh water pearls, and Swarovski crystals. No previous experience is necessary.</p><p><strong>This class serves as the pre-requisite for many Beadology Iowa classes.</strong></p><p><em>Registration is through Kirkwood Community College. <p>Learn the basics of wrapping stones with wire. Students will practice with copper wire to form a plan for a particular stone, then move to sterling wire for the final project. <p>Brick stitch is a fun stitch for making shapes and patterns. Make a triangle, then learn tips and tricks for adding fringe that flows well yet is not too loose. Woven Cloth Broach
<p>Join internationally known basket weaver and wire jewelry artist Marilyn Moore in a wire cloth class. Make this bead encrusted broach exploring ways to use wire cloth and beads. This luxurious looking adornment will be a fun exploration into these materials. Hemming wire cloth and stitching beads using simple beading techniques will be covered. You can turn this piece into a barrette by simply stitching on a different finding. No experience needed. Capped Caged Earrings
<p>This is a great next steps wire working class for those with basic wire wrapping and weavings skills. Participants will create a wire woven cage that will sit on top of a bead, to make a dangly pair of earrings. These cages make for a great component in other jewelry projects. Gyrls Night Out: Chevron Beaded Bracelet

<p>Hollow beads are a challenge as you need heat to melt the glass, yet too much heat contracts the glass and you lose the hollow nature of your bead. Learn tips and tricks to making hollow beads. Try making a bead inside your hollow bead.
