Cupped Copper Earrings through Kirkwood Community College
<p>Participants will learn to stamp and dap copper disks into earrings of their design. Some may choose to keep their copper bright or oxidize it for a different look. Beads will be added to the center and/or the bottom. This is an active, fun, and loud class. No experience necessary.</p><p><em>Registration is through Kirkwood Community College. In recovery from a decade-long opioid addiction, Hampton has rocketed to the center of America’s rising addiction recovery advocacy movement. An alumnus of the Clinton White House, he’s worked with multiple non-profits and national recovery advocacy campaigns. He is now a prominent, leading face and voice of recovery advocacy and is changing the national conversation about addiction.</p><p><strong>Kenyon Murray</strong><br>Former Hawkeye Basketball player, father and mental health advocate, Kenyon Murray will discuss mental health in the athletic arena. Through is own experience and the experiences of this three children, Kenyon has insight on the impact of social media, fan behavior, and notoriety in young athletes.</p><p><strong>Jeff Johnston</strong><br>Cedar Rapids native and local entrepreneur, Jeff Johnston has run a successful financial services firm in Cedar Rapids for over 32 years. In 2016, Jeff lost his son, Seth, to fentanyl poisoning, and in 2021, lost his wife Prudence, to alcoholism. Jeff has dedicated the last 6 years of his life to spreading awareness about substance use disorders & mental health. In 2020 he founded the Living Undeterred Project, a non-profit aimed at addiction prevention & mental health advocacy. During the summer of 2022, Jeff completed a 95-day journey across the United States to change the narrative on mental health, substance abuse & addiction. Winter Gardening Fair
<p>The Winter Gardening Fair 2023 is on Saturday, February 18 and is a day-long event with over 70 gardening workshops presented by Iowa gardening experts. Fifty sessions will be brand new topics this year! Beginner gardeners and seasoned professionals are welcome, as classes cover many topics at many levels. </p><p>Workshop topics range from Apartment Agriculture, Designing a Natural Garden, Pollinator Magnets, and Vermicomposting: Let the Worms Do the Work. Hands-on classes include how to propagate houseplants, how to make a rustic tower terrace, and making a succulent dish garden.</p><p> There will be numerous gardening vendors and non-profit organizations to visit before, during and after the classes, as well as a seed swap for attendees!</p><p> Tuition covers your choice of five sessions, horticultural-related society displays and vendors, a lunch, and complimentary beverages. Local Libraries LIT: Kevin Wilson Author Event
<p>Local Libraries LIT (Listen, Initiate, Talk), a collaboration between Johnson County libraries, will welcome author Kevin Wilson on <strong>Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 7:00 p.m. for a free online reading and conversation</strong>. The Local Libraries LIT author series is offered by public libraries in Johnson County, as well as the University of Iowa Libraries and Kirkwood Community College Library – Iowa City Campus with support from The Tuesday Agency.</p><p>Kevin Wilson is the author of two collections: <em>Tunneling to the Center of the Earth</em>, which received an Alex Award from the American Library Association and the Shirley Jackson Award, and <em>Baby You’re Gonna Be Mine</em>. In addition to the upcoming <em>We Are Fugitives</em> and 2019’s <em>Nothing to See Here</em> (selected by Jenna Bush Hager for the Read with Jenna book club, and a Best Book of the Year according to The New York Times, Washington Post, People, TIME, Entertainment Weekly, and more) Kevin is also the author of the novels <em>The Family Fang</em>—a NYT bestseller adapted into a film starring Nicole Kidman and Jason Bateman—and the critically acclaimed <em>Perfect Little World</em>.</p><p>This special speaker series is offered at no charge to participants, though donations are welcomed to help sustain and grow Local Libraries LIT.
