History of the U.S. Constitution - Articles of Confederation

28 S Linn St, Iowa City, IA 52240

Room 302

Register online or call 319-356-5220 Presenter: Thomas McDonald

This series presents the history of the US Constitution, from the preceding Articles of Confederation to the ratification of the 27th Amendment. Attend any or all sessions; please register for each session you would like to attend. Membership required.

It is often forgotten, overlooked, or perhaps even unknown, that initially the government of the United States operated under Articles of Confederacy. It is of course speculation whether the Constitution would have become a reality without first experiencing government control, and lack of control, under the Articles of Confederation. It can however be stated that because the Articles of Confederation were only semi-successful as the governing instrument of the United States, the Constitution came into being. It must be remembered that the founding premise of the United States was new, it had never before been tried and there was very little guidance on which to base the design and governmental functionality of this new government. Perhaps without this 8 year experiment of operating under the Articles of Confederation, the Constitution would not be the document that has survived for 233 years.
2023-02-01 15:00:00 -06002/07/232:00 p.m.Iowa City Senior CenterIowa City -

The Wizard of Oz

It’s The Wizard of Oz you know and love — except that the characters are live on stage and in full color. Oh, and everyone dances the whole time! Based on both the book and the classic 1939 movie, The Wizard of Oz brings Frank Baum’s unforgettable story to life — while giving it a ballet twist. As Dorothy, Toto, and their three Ozian friends search for a brain, a heart, some nerve, and a path back to Kansas, they encounter munchkins, monkeys, and a witch. But while the Yellow Brick Road may be a familiar path, the clicking red shoes take a few unexpected steps here and there. Choreographer Erin Alarcón let her imagination run free in this original ballet. She blended roles for the company’s professional dancers with parts for 50-plus young guest dancers from the Dubuque area, led by the Academy of Ballet.
4/21/237:00 p.m.University of Dubuque Heritage CenterDubuque -

Blessing of the Bock

The first day of Spring may not come for a few days, but people at Iowa Brewing Company ring in the new season with a different kind of celebration.

The celebration is called "Blessing of the Bock" and it featured a presentation from brew masters and beer-lovers blessing their bock-style of beer at the brewery.

The ceremony is 24 years old, and was started by brew master of the Stone City Brewing Jeff Allen. The Solon brewery is no longer in operation, but the tradition continued in Cedar Rapids, with Allen serving as "Father Hops" and the leader of the ceremonial dedication.
2023-01-23 22:00:00 -06003/04/231:00 p.m.Iowa Brewing CompanyCedar Rapids -

Faces of Hope: The Original Residents of the Clark House by Bob Campagna

“The move of the historic Alexander Clark house was a dramatic moment,” states Alexander. “Beyond the logistics of moving and preserving the Alexander Clark house, there are a series of displays highlighting the story of Alexander Clark and sharing what makes Alexander Clark significant on a national level.”

Alexander Clark was Iowa’s most prominent Black citizen of the 19th century and a national leader in the cause of equal rights, his career culminating in service as U.S. ambassador to Liberia. Born free in Pennsylvania in 1826, he settled in Muscatine at age 16. He worked as a barber and acquired timberland along the Mississippi River and sold firewood for steamboats. He invested in real estate and amassed considerable wealth, becoming one of the town’s most accomplished residents.

Clark emerged as a civil-rights leader while in his early twenties. In 1853 he attended as a delegate the National Convention of the Free People of Color, connecting him with national leaders, like Frederick Douglass, in the fight for equal rights. During the Civil War, he played a major role in the formation of the state’s only Black regiment. After the war, in 1868, the Iowa Supreme Court ruling in Clark's lawsuit against segregated schools affirmed the right all of Iowa children to attend public school regardless of race, religion, nationality, or appearance. Clark was also active in Republican politics and won acclaim as “the Colored Orator of the West” for his speeches on suffrage and universal rights.

Clark became the second Black graduate of the University of Iowa School of Law in 1884 at the age of 58. His son, Alexander, Jr., was the first Black graduate of the law school in 1879. Clark’s access to Black audiences swelled when, in 1882, along with his son Alexander, Jr., and fellow attorney Ferdinand L. Barnett, he purchased The Conservator, Chicago’s first Black newspaper. He served as the editor and became the sole owner in 1884. In 1887, he chaired the executive committee of the National Colored Press Association, connecting him to prominent journalist and activist Ida B. Wells.
2023-02-03 17:00:00 -06002/16/2310:00 a.m.Muscatine Art CenterMuscatine -

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane

Once, in a house on Egypt Street, there lived a china rabbit named Edward Tulane. The rabbit was very pleased with himself, and for good reason: he was owned by a girl named Abilene, who treated him with the utmost care and adored him completely. And then, one day, he was lost. Based on the story by Kate DiCamillo, we learn that even a heart of the most breakable kind can learn to love, to lose, and love again.
2023-01-19 20:30:00 -06004/28/237:00 p.m.Hope Martin TheatreWaterloo -

Art Lovers Book Club Defiant Spirits: The Modernist Revolution of the Group of Seven by Ross King, Free

Jackson, Franz Johnston, Arthur Lismer, J. E. H. MacDonald, and Frederick Varley, over a dozen years in Canadian history.
