Dan Tedesco

Dan Tedesco at CSPS Hall on Saturday, September 30, 2023 @ 8PM.

Dan Tedesco's story is that he has no story, per se. The only serious addiction in his life, if you'd like to call it that, has been with music. Like many of his heroes, Dan was a bit of a social outcast. That, if anything, was and has always been his struggle. Dan Tedesco found his comfort, security, and confidence in the world out on the fringe, populated by the misfits. Awful Purdies, Abbie & the Sawyers and The Night Lights, with Deb Talan, will bring to the stage songs for the heart and soul, reflecting their lived experiences as mothers, friends, women, artists and activists.

Awful Purdies

Awful Purdies is a Folk-Americana collective of five multi-instrumental women, powered by seamless harmonies, banjo, accordion, cello, guitar, mandolin, and bass. The sound is an earnest nod to traditional American music, folk, old country, bluegrass, honky tonk, and soul. The live performance experience is intimate, containing both humor and insight. On stage, Awful Purdies actively share gratitude and support of one another and take turns stepping up as lead singers and songwriters. Since 2006, Awful Purdies have been raising families, telling women’s stories, advocating for human rights, and engaging with their communities in Eastern Iowa

Abbie & the Sawyers

Think folksy swoons and harmonic ditties, with playful melodic (and lyrical) range. Abbie & the Sawyers make songs that feel warm, whether it's an uptempo summer dance-along or a slow ode to night spent with someone you love. As described by dsm Magazine, their “unique blend of backwoods Appalachia and Midwest charm creates a sound that is stunningly intimate.

The Night Lights

The Diplomettes from Diplomats of Solid Sound banded together to create lush, harmony-driven feely folk at Golden Bear Studio in Des Moines. These long-time friends and bandmates' original songs tell stories about motherhood, personal evolution and friendship

Deb Talan

Deb Talan has been writing songs since she was 14 years old. Granted, her style has changed a bit since writing the forever-unknown smash-hit “Through the Window” about feeling numb, like life was going on somewhere out there but not accessible to her (at 14. so jaded.) She played clarinet, wrote songs on piano, later taught herself to play guitar in college, got obsessed with Shawn Colvin, was a vegetarian for 4 years, ended that with a hotdog and a swim in lake Michigan, started a band in Portland, OR with her friend Mark, named it Hummingfish, wrote a lot of fun songs that people danced to ‘til they were all sweaty in that hipster/grungy/geeky Northwest kind of way, moved back to the east coast 6 years and a divorce later and began playing solo in Boston coffee houses (read: 4 different Starbucks that she also poured espresso at) opened shows for Catie Curtis (a songwriter hero of hers) met up with Steve Tannen and formed The Weepies, played shows all over the country and the world, toured in a real tourbus! moved to LA, got married to Steve, made 5 records and 3 amazing boy-children together with him, had songs placed in loads of movies and tv shows, moved to Iowa, got breast cancer, got chemotherapy and relied heavily on marijuana for pain and nausea relief(Legalize, for gods’ sakes, can we grow up as a country, please?) recovered from breast cancer, made a solo album, struggled with mental health issues (Childhood Incest Survivor, lucky to be alive, music has helped, and so have many blessed healers) and relationship issues for 6 years, got divorced from Steve. She has a lot she could say these days. She prefers to listen. But playing songs for people is a close second. Music heals. Songs can be prayers. Deb Talan is some lovely damn proof of that.
2023-09-19 05:00:00 -050010/01/23 @ 3:30 p.m.Englert TheatreIowa City -

Whether as a band or a solo artist, We Are The Willows crafts dynamic songs with contemplative air. Mipso live at the First Avenue Club in Iowa City

The First Avenue Club welcomes Mipso on Sunday, October 29th. General Seating (seat at table with other customers) tickets are just $25 (including fees). Reserved Table for 4 with tickets just $120 (including fees). This is an all ages show. Doors are at 6:00pm and show is at 7:00pm.

Tickets: https://first-avenue-club.square.site/product/mipso/337?cs=true&cst=custom

Mipso formed in 2012 as an excuse to play together between classes in Chapel Hill. Joseph Terrell came from a family of banjo-playing uncles and a guitarist grandma, and he’d gotten curious again about the string band music he’d heard as a kid. Jacob Sharp was raised on equal parts Doc Watson and Avett Brothers in the mountains of North Carolina and he was hunting for a chance to sing some harmonies. Wood Robinson added a Charlie Haden-esque interest in bridging jazz and grass sensibilities on the double bass, and Libby Rodenbough soon joined on fiddle, unsatisfied by her classical violin training but drawn like a moth toward the glow of old, weird Americana.

“Book of Fools” is the new Mipso album. Some of the songs feel pretty rock and roll. There’s a looseness and an energy to the 11-song batch, with electric guitars and barroom piano and a good groove on the kit. It has some nice harmonies, too, the tight kind you’d expect from four friends who’ve been singing together for a decade. The songs are really good ones. You’ll want to keep singing them loud in the car and in your head while you walk around the supermarket. Dandelion Stompers record release party & swing dance

Voted “Best Local Band” by Little Village Magazine for 2022, join us for a special evening of music and dancing, celebrating Dandelion Stompers debut album, "Whirlwind Sessions Volume 1"!

About the Stompers: Specializing in honoring 1920s trad jazz composers and musicians with dance inspiring, New Orleans-style treatments, The Dandelions Stompers were founded in 2014 by band leader and bari sax aficionado Christopher Clark. Handing the lead mic to jazz singer Katie Roche, they tapped husband and wife Marc (guitar) and Brandi (stand-up bass) Janssen to hold down the rhythm section, adding one of the area’s premier jazz drummers Tim Crumley, driving on the skins. No NOLA style outfit would be complete without a heavy dose of brass and wood. Rounding out the horn section is soaring clarinet of Suzanne Smith, Devin van Holsteijn on his lilting alto sax, and Katie Greenstein blasting on trumpet.
2023-09-19 10:00:00 -050011/10/23 @ 7:30 p.m.The James TheaterIowa City -

But before the road forked into country, the musical odyssey of brothers Bellamy started creatively smoldering in their home state of Florida, before exploding nationally amidst the ’70’s pop music culture of L.A.

The brothers first official gig was in 1968, playing a free show with their father at the Rattlesnake Roundup in San Antonio, Florida. They honed their early skills playing Black clubs throughout the south, and singing backup for artists such as Percy Sledge, Eddie Floyd and Little Anthony & The Imperials. Within a few months, the brothers moved north, immersing themselves and their rock/country sound in the Atlanta market, where the Allman Brothers were the emerging kings of the music world.

With the dawning of the Age of Aquarius on the horizon, and America embroiled in a smoke haze of drugs, civil unrest and an unpopular war, The Bellamy’s music picked-up the hard driving edge that bespoke the times. Songwriting had become David Bellamy’s drug of choice during the long road gigs he and Howard were regularly pulling bodies and equipment to and from. It was his songwriting that was posed to soon provide the duo a national breakout.

The break came in the form of the hit, “Spiders & Snakes,” written by David and recorded by Jim Stafford. The song became a smash, eventually selling more than three million units worldwide. It became the catapult that rocketed the brothers onto the L.A. music scene. Young and impressionable, Howard and David fell into the musical circle of the greats of the day: Bob Dylan, James Taylor and Van Morrison, as well as West Coast based country rockers like Poco and the Byrds.

It was a creative shoe that fit.

Now known by their music and the company they were keeping, The Bellamys officially lifted off the launch pad in 1976 when their single, “Let Your Love Flow,” became an instant smash in both the U.S. and Europe. It stayed on the international charts long enough to build a huge international fan base for the hip young brothers that endures to this day. In Germany alone it perched at No. 1 for more than two months. The love was indeed flowing as The Bellamys jammed for audiences on their sold-out concerts and shared stages with the likes of Loggins & Messina, the Doobie Brothers and the Beach Boys with their patented blend of rock/country music. True to their musical roots, their style and their songwriting was moving steadily more towards their raising.

By the late ‘70’s The Bellamys were emerging on the country charts with another bona fide smash. “If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body (Would You Hold It Against Me),” originally scrawled on a dinner napkin by David, rocketed them to the top of the country charts the way “Let Your Love Flow,” had done in the pop market just a few years earlier. It proved to be the first of a string of fourteen No. 1 singles in the U.S. alone.

Success followed success: “Dancing Cowboys,” “Sugar Daddy,” “You Ain’t Just Whistlin’ Dixie,” “Lovers Live Longer,” “Do You Love As Good As You Look,” “Redneck Girl,” “For All The Wrong Reasons,” “I Love Her Mind,” “I Need More Of You,” “Old Hippie,” “Too Much Is Not Enough,” “Kids Of The Baby Boom,” “Reggae Cowboy” and “Crazy From The Heart,”…all have lined the corridors of the Bellamy’s musical history and their walls with platinum and gold.

Along the way, Howard and David created a patent on the newly cool “duo” category in country music. In the era of the 2000’s, The Bellamy Brothers hold the record in both the Academy of Country Music (ACM) and the Country Music Association Awards (CMA) for the most duo nominations. Numerous GRAMMY nods have also been directed toward the brothers. Internationally, the story has been the same—though the titles may be different. The Bellamys have released more than two-dozen hit songs outside the U.S. that were never released here. With a sharp eye on the songwriting skills that have been the bedrock of their success, Howard and David concur that their career is unique in their international finesse for matching their songs to the market.

“For the international releases, you have to have a strong melody,” notes David. “The lyric is very important, but internationally the melody is something fans can lock into, even if they can’t understand the lyrics.” Howard and David continue to perform and film TV specials in Europe and around the world.

These days when the subject turns to touring, The Bellamys are showing a new generation of country music how it’s done. Country superstar Blake Shelton has helped introduce a new era of fans to the hits of The Bellamy Brothers during his annual Friends And Heroes Tour, where they continue to captivate arena audiences around the country. “We’re old road dogs,” grins Howard when asked about the motivation behind the brothers 200 plus concert dates each year. Adds David: “Our live draw is bigger than it was in the ‘80’s. I think the same people that grew up with us and with our music in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s obviously have raised a whole new generation of Bellamy fans who started toddling to our music. Now they’re turning up at our concerts as college kids, who are really turned on and tuned in to us and our music….it’s a great feeling.”

On the infrequent off days from the road, Howard and David head the bus back to their 150-acre family ranch in Darby, Florida just north of Tampa. A working ranch, the spread consists of Purebred Brahman Cattle and quarter horses. The Bellamys are opening up their lives to television audiences with their hit reality show “Honky Tonk Ranch.” Each episode of “Honky Tonk Ranch” enthralls viewers with the unpredictable misadventures of the Bellamys attempting to balance their globe-trotting touring schedule while also running their sprawling family ranch in south Florida. The show was originally broadcast on “The Cowboy Channel” (a subsidy of RFD-TV) and streamed around the world. Season two of “Honky Tonk Ranch” airs now on Thursday evenings at 8:30 p.m. ET on the Circle Network and will also be available for worldwide streaming in the very near future.

The Bellamy Brothers celebrated their 40th anniversary with the release of a two-CD collection, 40 years, an ambitious project containing 20 of their biggest hits and 20 brand-new songs. In 2019, the Bellamys released Over the Moon as well as their first book Let Your Love Flow – the Life and Times of The Bellamy Brothers. The book is about two Florida cowboys who journeyed from country poverty to worldwide musical stardom because they had the talent and because it never occurred to them, they couldn’t make it.

Their most recent project, Bucket List, debuted in July of 2020 with “Rednecks (Lookin’ for Paychecks),” a timely take on the current situation, leading the EP. Bucket List also includes “No Country Music For Old Men,” a collaboration with longtime friend John Anderson inspired by the loss of Kenny Rogers, and more light-hearted songs like “Lay Low, Stay High,” which ties into Howard and David’s recent partnership with the Florida-based medical marijuana company, Trulieve, on their flower product line Old Hippie Stash.
2022-11-08 23:59:00 -060011/17/23 @ 7:00 p.m.First Avenue ClubIowa City -

The name "High Bank Boys" comes from the body of water flowing through the band's home territory in Deep River, Iowa. The Deep River passes through the town of the same name, but the shallow stream wasn't named for its actual depth, but rather the "High Banks" that contain the river in the town and surrounding area. Known for having their practices in and around the community, the “High Bank Boys” became the perfect name for the sensational group of men that was founded there.

While shows performed by Tyler Richton and the High Bank Boys are youthful and lively, the four members of the High Bank Boys have more than 50 years of experience playing live music combined. With this kind of dedication and devotion to country music, it's no wonder that the High Bank Boys have become the premier country band in the area. Known for being an excellent dance band as well as making the crowd feel like "one of the guys" when there's no dance floor available, the High Bank Boys are at home playing in almost any kind of venue or event.

The musical travels of the various members of Tyler Richton and the High Bank Boys have been extensive, both before and through the formation of the current band. Music has taken them from local clubs, to fireman's dances and anniversary parties, and from the largest events and festivals to street dances in the smallest of towns throughout the entire state of Iowa. Tyler Richton and the High Bank Boys have been honored to be the opening act for Locash, John Michael Montgomery, High Valley, Sunny Sweeney, Jordan Davis and Brett Young, among others. Each performance has been a great professional achievement for them, and they anxiously look forward to the next opportunity!

Their most rewarding experiences, however, are the looks of satisfaction on the faces of their fans during and after another great show. It’s easy to see from their following, that this group of guys and the music they play is genuinely appreciated. Tyler Richton and the High Bank Boys’ repertoire includes iconic country cover tunes, as well as original music that is written and arranged by the band. All this and more makes the High Bank Boys a danceable, partying, crowd-pleasing, energetic band that is entertaining for folks of all ages.
While our group makes the music, it's the individuals in the band that make Tyler Richton and the High Bank Boys so unique.
2023-07-14 00:00:00 -050012/31/23 @ 7:30 p.m.First Avenue ClubIowa City
