Mushroom Foraging 101

You may already enjoy edible mushrooms when dining out or when you purchase them from the store. Come discover how to ethically harvest mushrooms from the forest. We will explore diagnostic features including size, color, shape of cap and stem, underside features including pores, gills and teeth, and more. Because mother nature is unpredictable, we can not say for sure what we will find on our journey. We will be on the look out for edible mushrooms including oysters, golden oysters, woodear, chicken of the woods, hen of the woods, dryads saddle, and chanterelles. We may also encounter nonedibles along the way.

Remember to always be 100% sure on your identification before consuming wild found foods.

You are invited no matter your level of outdoor experience.

Yummy snacks generously provided by New Pioneer Co-op.

THNGS TO BRING

Standard attire and sun protection for hands-on outdoor learning: hat, leather gloves, jeans, sunscreen

A notebook and a pen/pencil for writing and drawing (optional)

A sturdy outdoor knife with a fixed blade (optional)

REGISTRATION

Sliding scale fee: $25 - $0, based upon your access to resources.

This class is a part of a 4-class series. This Ability-Holistic Dance August

Jhe and Jenni both live with bilateral disabilities and chronic pain and have decided to entitle this form of movement “This Ability’’ as opposed to the term disability. She went on to study photography in Chicago, at Harrington School of Design and spent her twenties focused on learning about weaving, natural and synthetic dye processes, and shearing sheep. She interned at The Chicago Weaving School for 2 years, and through that process developed her own weaving curriculum that she then taught to the age of preschool to adult, in Chicago and Seattle. In 2018 she suffered an undiagnosed inflammatory episode that caused significant neuropathy and mobility loss. She has learned a lot through her personal healing journey and contributes most of that healing to the gift of a grateful mindset and a good mother.

LOCATION

Central Park, 501 6th St, Coralville, IA 52241, USA

COVID-19

The event is held outside. Walk with an Eco-Ologist at Prairiewoods: Mycology

Join us each month as we Walk with an Eco-Ologist at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha)! Each program will give you the opportunity to learn from a local ‘ologist and dive deeper into specific topics within the field of ecology. Come prepared to walk our trails and, depending on the topic, get a little dirty to get better acquainted with some of our plant and animal kin. We are excited to offer seven programs on the following topics: raptology (birds of prey), agronomy (farming), lepidopterology (butterflies and moths), wild ethnobotany (wild edibles and medicines), ornithology (birds), entomology (bugs) and dendrology (trees). On Sept. 6, join mycologist Roger Heidt, president of the Prairie States Mushroom Club, as we celebrate our fungal family. We will not only be searching for and identifying specimens of the mycological world, but also discussing the role that mushrooms and their mycelium play within our ecosystem. Closed-toe shoes and long pants are recommended. If you have binoculars, a camera with zoom or a butterfly net, feel free to bring them. A free-will offering will be accepted, and registration is required. For more information or to register, contact Prairiewoods at www.Prairiewoods.org or 319-395-6700.
2022-06-22 18:00:00 -05009/06/224:00 p.m.Prairiewoods Franciscan Spirituality CenterHiawatha -

Full Moon Nature & Forest Therapy Experience at Prairiewoods

We invite you to join the land at Prairiewoods and certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide Emelia Sautter for a walk with the natural world during the beauty of the full moon. Experience Forest Therapy, a sensory-focused practice that invites us to slow down and be present with self and the natural world around us. According to the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy, “Forest Therapy is a practice that supports health and wellness through guided immersion in forests and other environments to promote the well-being of both people and the land. It is inspired by shinrin yoku, the Japanese practice of ‘Forest Bathing.’” Much research has been done on the healing and therapeutic benefits of Forest Therapy. Hundreds of clinical and non-clinical studies show numerous positive effects, including reductions in stress, anxiety, depression, mental fatigue, anger and pain. Improvements include better cognitive functioning, sleep, mood, confidence and creativity. Time with our nature kin also boosts our immune system, regulates blood pressure, improves relationships, increases feelings of gratitude and much more. Please bring a water bottle and dress for being outdoors. The cost is $20, and registration is required by the previous day.
