Sacred Harp (Shape Note) Singing
<p>This session will be an introduction to Shape Note singing from <em>The Sacred Harp.</em> This is a singing tradition that started in colonial New England, persisted in the rural south, and has spread back across the country and around the world over the last 50 years. </p><p>We will start with a brief discussion of its history, notation, and traditions, then proceed with singing several selections from <em>The Sacred Harp. </em>Plans are to<em> </em>continue with monthly singings at this location on a schedule to be decided at this session.<em><br></em></p> 2023-09-05 12:00:00 -05009/23/23 @ 10:00 a.m.Kenwood Park United Methodist ChurchCedar Rapids -
Singing Bowl Prayer at Prairiewoods
<p>Throughout history, singing bowls have been used around the world to foster meditation, relaxation, prayer and mind-body-spirit wellness. In this session with Kathy Broghammer at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha), we will let the resonant sounds of Himalayan and crystal singing bowls relax the entire body and create a pathway for clearer connection with the divine. We will be invited to just receive and breathe. The cost is $8, and registration is required by noon. Read on the Rug
<p>Join us on the second Wednesday of each month in Iowa Hall at the UI Museum of Natural History for Read on the Rug. Ideal for families with kiddos aged 2-5, all are welcome to this free educational program. This program series was designed with our youngest museum lovers in mind. Come along as we build community and inspire a sense of wonder, curiosity, and respect for our natural and cultural worlds with stories, sing-alongs, and more in one of the most special places in Iowa City—<em>no matter your age</em>.</p><p>We'll meet in Iowa Hall. To access this space, use the main entrance on the east side of Macbride Hall or take the elevator with street level access just south of the main steps to the first floor and enter the south doors of Iowa Hall. Your museum staff and our program mascot Lumpy the Woolly Mammoth will see you there!</p><p><em>Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events.
