Conversations with a Peacemaker: welcoming refugees

Psychologist and human rights activist Efi Latsoudi will speak about her work with Lesvos Solidarity, a grassroots organization based on Lesvos Island in Greece. Efi coordinated and founded the first open independent welcoming shelter (Pipka Camp) for refugees fleeing to Greece primarily from Africa and the Middle East. Pipka Camp operated for 8 years until it was forcibly closed by Greek authorities in October 2020.

Efi and Lesvos Soildarity continue to advocate for the rights of the refugees, running programs for housing, education, employment, and physical and psychosocial health. Their vision is to promote equality, trust, creativity, empowerment, and respect for each other and the environment. They serve the most vulnerable refugees-those suffering from serious medical conditions, victims of torture and violence, families with many children, pregnant women, newborns, LGBTQIA+ persons, victims of shipwrecks who lost loved ones at sea. She has received the Nansen Award from the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, the Anita Augsburg Award from Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, and the International Peace Award from the German Institute die Schwelle.
2023-09-07 14:30:00 -05009/23/23 @ 1:00 p.m.First Presbyterian ChurchCedar Rapids -
