Being in fourth grade is hard enough. Being in fourth grade during the Great Depression in Iowa? That's a real challenge. Young Eva Killen, her family, and her hobo friend Coal Car Riggs work together to survive the Depression. Along the way they will cross paths with Grant Wood, Jeff Davis the Hobo King, and the Million Dollar Mulligan. This first-person story for adults and kids alike weaves together the lives of the hobo Coal Car Riggs and a young farm girl as they struggle to survive.
