Event Description

Join us for the 52nd Annual Mel Oliven Lecture on Thursday, March 7, from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Kirkwood Community College's campus in Iowa Hall Room B! Our lecture this year is featuring Dr. Alexandra Hall, with a lecture entitled, "The Biology of Sex." This event is free and open to the public.

Alexandra Hall, M.D., is a senior lecturer at the University of Wisconsin – Stout, where she teaches a wide range of classes, including Human Sexual Biology, Public Health, and Cadaver Dissection. Trained in theater, education, and medicine, Dr. Hall is passionate about sharing her knowledge of human health with students and the broader community in engaging and accessible ways.

The Biology of Sex is a frequently misunderstood and misconstrued topic. In this engaging and interactive presentation, Dr. Hall will discuss the science of how we develop our body parts as well as our gender identity and sexuality. Her extensive clinical experience in reproductive health informs and clarifies these often confusing concepts in an open and factual manner.

Dr. Hall’s training includes a bachelor’s degree in Science Education from New York University, a medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine, stints as teachers for both Kaplan and New York City Public Schools, a residency in Family Medicine at the University of Vermont, and many years on the stage in musical theater productions. In her career as a physician, she migrated from full-scope family practice to college health, first at Cornell University and then at UW-Stout, and developed expertise in Women’s, Sexual, and Transgender health. Dr. Hall began to speak, both regionally and nationally, on these topics and enjoyed teaching so much that she recently retired from clinical practice to teach full-time at UW-Stout. In addition to her work with college students, Dr. Hall also gives community presentations, supervises events for Wisconsin Science Olympiad, and writes for Those Nerdy Girls, a team of women scientists who work to communicate the latest developments in health and medicine in a clear and actionable way.
