Event Description

The History Center invites the community to join in on ORAL HISTORIES LIVE! offering interviews with influential members of Linn County who share their stories and preserve legacies.

Tom was born and raised in Bellefontaine, Ohio. He graduated from Franklin University, Columbus, OH in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. Tom enlisted in the US Air Force in 1969 where he served until 1973. While stationed at Offutt Air Base, near Omaha, he met Lillie Rose Bragg. They were married on August 5, 1972. After his discharge, he became employed at The Quaker Oats Company, where he worked in several management positions during his 30-year career. Following his retirement from Quaker Oats, Tom was employed as Executive Director of the African American Museum of Iowa (which he helped to found in 1993). He held that position for 15 years before retiring in 2016.

Teaching Sunday School is Tom’s passion, and he has taught in several churches for more than 55 years. He was blessed to have served on the boards of numerous non-profit organizations (mostly human services). Tom is an avid golfer and enjoys exercising, bowling, biking, and tennis. His greatest joy is his children Daryl and Carmen, his grandchildren, and great grandson.
