Event Description
Local artist Kay Irelan's new show at The ArtiFactory Gallery runs through August. There will be an opening reception Friday July 12 from 6-8 p.m. The gallery is open Saturdays 1-3 p.m. or by appointment. Admission is free.
Kay grew up in Texas, Iowa, and New Jersey, raised by parents who encouraged her love of art making from a young age. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and drawing from the University of Iowa and enjoyed a career as an illustrator and graphic artist, working for private businesses, non-profits, publishers, and state and local governments. For a few years, she was also a decorative painter and muralist in homes and businesses. Most of her life has been spent in Iowa, where she raised two daughters. Her art may be seen in the permanent collections at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and at the Iowa City Public Library, where it can be borrowed by patrons.
About her work, Kay says: “I use different mediums (acrylic paint, relief printing, collage) and explore different themes in my art…I've been a painter most of my life, in addition to earning a living as an illustrator and graphic artist. Since retiring a few years ago, I've explored printmaking, too. My inspiration comes from the natural world and my everyday surroundings. It's the simple things and beauty in my life that I find most meaningful. My aim is to create beauty with form, color, and pattern.”
