Red Cedar Chamber Music: Retracted Retirement

Brahms took himself out of retirement to write this piece. The great composer Johannes Brahms briefly retired from composition in 1890 at the age of 57. However, after hearing clarinetist Richard Muhlfeld perform, he came out of retirement to write some of his greatest works, including his Clarinet Trio, two Clarinet Sonatas, and his Clarinet Quintet. The Quintet, an imposing four-movement work, is considered a masterpiece of composition and is central to the clarinet repertory. It is no wonder that our long-time friend Christine Bellomy has been asking us to perform this work for more than three decades. The program also includes Jewish Sketches Op. 12 by Alexander Krein, a colorful and spirited three-movement work. Core ensemble members violinist Miera Kim and cellist Carey Bostian are joined by clarinetist Christine Bellomy, violinist Katie Wolfe, and violist Donghee Han in a program for string quartet and clarinet.

This series of concerts is made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts, Farmers State Bank, the City of Marion, AEGON Transamerica Foundation, the Giacoletto Foundation, the McIntyre Foundation, and the Grandon Foundation. Additional support comes from United Fire Group and Friends of Red Cedar Chamber Music.

Artist sponsorship is generously provided by Juanita Dennert.
2023-09-21 16:00:00 -05009/30/23 @ 3:00 p.m.Hiawatha Public LibraryHiawatha -

Mauricio Lasansky: Master Printmaker

The Museum is fortunate to be able to dedicate four galleries to the work of consummate printmaker, Mauricio Lasansky. Making prints for more than 65 years--first in his native Argentina, then in New York City, and for more than 55 years in Iowa City, Iowa--Lasansky's generous gift of prints in the 1980s and 1990s made it possible for the Museum to present a wide range of the artist's works, changing all four galleries every six months. Best known for large-scale prints in which he uses multiple plates and full ranges of color, Lasansky combines a spectrum of graphic techniques including etching, drypoint, aquatint, and engraving. Throughout his stylistic evolution, he created eloquent figural statements that are colorful, fresh, and spontaneous.
2023-09-30 16:00:00 -05009/30/23 @ 10:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -

Cory Christiansen

His mixed media works are efforts to answer big questions such as how we came about, what our purpose is, and what our history tells us about ourselves and our future. Christiansen uses conceptual pieces, historical reference, and aesthetic means in his explorations. The character of his work is continually changing based on his perpetual search for innovative technology, novel techniques, and inspiration from mentors, past and present.

Christiansen explains, “One of my favorite Jon Fasanelli-Cawelti quotes is, ‘I've always loved history. It made perfect sense that I would end up being a dinosaur.’ Jon embraced the prehistoric practice of mark making, that basic act of creation, that is innately human and central to personal fulfillment. His enthusiasm, dedication to his art, and indomitable spirit inspired resurrection of my own dinosaur instincts, for which I am eternally grateful.”

Christiansen’s exhibition opens on August 10, 2023 and runs through March 10, 2024. The public is invited to meet the artist during the free reception from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 20th.
2023-10-01 17:00:00 -050010/01/23 @ 10:00 a.m.Muscatine Art CenterMuscatine -
Jon Fasanelli-Cawelti: The Man Filled with Music

In this first major exhibition of Fasanelli-Cawelti’s work since his passing in 2021, the artist’s love of music, playing the trumpet, and performing with the Muscatine Symphony Orchestra and Mad Creek Mudcats permeate into this body of work. A true Renaissance man, art, music, philosophy, literature, and history were part of his everyday life.

For more than fourteen years, Fasanelli-Cawelti served as assistant to the world renowned printmaker Mauricio Lasansky. A selection of Lasansky’s portraits from the permanent collection will be on view on the second floor of the gallery from September 21, 2023 through January 28, 2024.

2023-10-01 17:00:00 -050010/01/23 @ 10:00 a.m.Muscatine Art CenterMuscatine -

Surprise! The New Curator’s Surprise Finds in the Collection

In July 2023, Julia Jessen joined the CRMA staff as Curator of Collections and Exhibitions. While change can be challenging, it can also be exciting. A new curator means a new set of eyes on the collection and a new batch of ideas—in short, a new vision. One of the first things Jessen was charged with was getting to know the museum’s permanent collection. A museum’s collection is part of its identity, and she wanted to become familiar with the collection right away. This exhibition features some of the finds Jessen discovered while looking through the collection. By sharing those surprises with the public, she allows visitors to see how a curator thinks about and reacts to works in the collection

2023-10-01 16:00:00 -050010/01/23 @ 12:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -
Adam Rake: World Lines

Adam Rake: World Lines

September 9, 2023 – January 7, 2024

Iowa City artist Adam Rake explores the complex ways in which the meaning of a work of art changes over time as technology and culture evolve. To convey this theme, Rake draws on the precedent of historical artworks but filters them through his own unique lens. He utilizes his printmaking experience to distort, alter, and augment the original images into something entirely new. Through these works, he considers the ever-changing relationship between contemporary culture and the work of art.
2023-10-01 16:00:00 -050010/01/23 @ 12:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -

On display now in the Main Library Gallery, University of Iowa Libraries:

Hey Buddy, I’m Bill tells the story of Bill Sackter, the namesake of Wild Bill’s (formerly Wild Bill’s Coffee Shop) in the University of Iowa School of Social Work. Awful Purdies, Abbie & the Sawyers and The Night Lights, with Deb Talan, will bring to the stage songs for the heart and soul, reflecting their lived experiences as mothers, friends, women, artists and activists.

Awful Purdies

Awful Purdies is a Folk-Americana collective of five multi-instrumental women, powered by seamless harmonies, banjo, accordion, cello, guitar, mandolin, and bass. The sound is an earnest nod to traditional American music, folk, old country, bluegrass, honky tonk, and soul. The live performance experience is intimate, containing both humor and insight. On stage, Awful Purdies actively share gratitude and support of one another and take turns stepping up as lead singers and songwriters. Since 2006, Awful Purdies have been raising families, telling women’s stories, advocating for human rights, and engaging with their communities in Eastern Iowa

Abbie & the Sawyers

Think folksy swoons and harmonic ditties, with playful melodic (and lyrical) range. Abbie & the Sawyers make songs that feel warm, whether it's an uptempo summer dance-along or a slow ode to night spent with someone you love. As described by dsm Magazine, their “unique blend of backwoods Appalachia and Midwest charm creates a sound that is stunningly intimate.

The Night Lights

The Diplomettes from Diplomats of Solid Sound banded together to create lush, harmony-driven feely folk at Golden Bear Studio in Des Moines. These long-time friends and bandmates' original songs tell stories about motherhood, personal evolution and friendship

Deb Talan

Deb Talan has been writing songs since she was 14 years old. Granted, her style has changed a bit since writing the forever-unknown smash-hit “Through the Window” about feeling numb, like life was going on somewhere out there but not accessible to her (at 14. so jaded.) She played clarinet, wrote songs on piano, later taught herself to play guitar in college, got obsessed with Shawn Colvin, was a vegetarian for 4 years, ended that with a hotdog and a swim in lake Michigan, started a band in Portland, OR with her friend Mark, named it Hummingfish, wrote a lot of fun songs that people danced to ‘til they were all sweaty in that hipster/grungy/geeky Northwest kind of way, moved back to the east coast 6 years and a divorce later and began playing solo in Boston coffee houses (read: 4 different Starbucks that she also poured espresso at) opened shows for Catie Curtis (a songwriter hero of hers) met up with Steve Tannen and formed The Weepies, played shows all over the country and the world, toured in a real tourbus! moved to LA, got married to Steve, made 5 records and 3 amazing boy-children together with him, had songs placed in loads of movies and tv shows, moved to Iowa, got breast cancer, got chemotherapy and relied heavily on marijuana for pain and nausea relief(Legalize, for gods’ sakes, can we grow up as a country, please?) recovered from breast cancer, made a solo album, struggled with mental health issues (Childhood Incest Survivor, lucky to be alive, music has helped, and so have many blessed healers) and relationship issues for 6 years, got divorced from Steve. She has a lot she could say these days. She prefers to listen. But playing songs for people is a close second. Music heals. Songs can be prayers. Deb Talan is some lovely damn proof of that.
2023-09-19 05:00:00 -050010/01/23 @ 3:30 p.m.Englert TheatreIowa City -

Art Exhibit: "Animalia" by Maggie Vandewalle

Gilded Pear Gallery is excited to present "Animalia”, a solo exhibition in the 2nd floor gallery. Exhibition on view August 14-October 28, 2023

“Animalia is a term used to describe any multicellular living thing, from the very real possibility of a tipsy bumble bee to the slightly more fantastical phenomenon known as a battycat (though the science may still be out on that last). When used as a title for this show, it allows for the continuing exploration of fur, feather and fin with just a whiff of story around the edges. While growing up, if I wasn’t outside, I would spend most of my time with my nose in books. From a young age I fervently hoped that if I looked hard enough or sat still long enough, I would discover all the talking animals and hidden doorways I knew to exist from the likes of Tolkien and Carroll. Instead I came to know mice and spiders and toads, as I roamed in the fields and woods around my home. It wasn’t until I was older that I understood the real magic had been in the fields themselves and the creatures I was privy to have watched while patiently waiting. As an artist I depict animals and their environments realistically but with quirks, a bit of humor and always with great respect”

Maggie Vandewalle was born and raised in Iowa City, Iowa. In 1981, she received an art scholarship to the University of Iowa where she worked toward a BFA in printmaking. After college, she gravitated to watercolor—a medium she uses almost exclusively today. She recalls a childhood divided between two passions—an insatiable love of reading and a profound fascination for the natural world.
