Art Exhibit: Jim Ochs 45 Years of Work

Gilded Pear Gallery is excited to present "Jim Ochs: 45 years of Work”, a posthumous solo exhibition in the main gallery. Exhibition on view August 14-October 28, 2023

James Ochs (1943-2022)

James Ochs was an artist, teacher, civil servant, veteran of a foreign conflict and Iowa resident for 50 years. He was inspired by art from all over the globe and transposed various styles into his own work. Hailing from Denver, Colorado, James gained print experience at Blacks Print Studio in New York City, where he worked in collage and paint at the Art Student League. He received his B.A. in painting at Colorado State University and went on to earn an M.A. and M.F.A in printmaking and drawing from the University of Iowa. After his education, he launched a successful independent art career that saw him utilize painting and printmaking techniques while exploring a wide breadth of topics and imagery. Art fairs and galleries were James’ passion, he enjoyed meeting patrons and other artists, often trading his works for others. His diverse catalogue spans portraits, landscapes, fantasy imagery and reworked tributes to other artists.

“I contrast things within the figure, something different, to make it more poetic and mystical, as opposed to something very classical,” said Ochs of the work.

Ochs’ work can be found in prominent art collections around the U.S., including the Des Moines Art Center; Muscatine Art Center, Muscatine, IA; Farm Bureau, Des Moines, IA; Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.; Harvard College, Cambridge, MA; and Brown University, Providence, RI. Featured in over 120 national, regional and solo shows nationwide, his works have received numerous awards, including the Coconut Grove Art Exhibition, Coconut Grove, FL; and the Winter Park Art Festival, Winter Park, FL.

www.gildedpeargallery.com/jim-ochs-45-years-of-work
2023-10-14 14:00:00 -050010/14/23 @ 10:00 a.m.Gilded Pear GalleryCedar Rapids -

Mauricio Lasansky: Master Printmaker

The Museum is fortunate to be able to dedicate four galleries to the work of consummate printmaker, Mauricio Lasansky. Making prints for more than 65 years--first in his native Argentina, then in New York City, and for more than 55 years in Iowa City, Iowa--Lasansky's generous gift of prints in the 1980s and 1990s made it possible for the Museum to present a wide range of the artist's works, changing all four galleries every six months. Best known for large-scale prints in which he uses multiple plates and full ranges of color, Lasansky combines a spectrum of graphic techniques including etching, drypoint, aquatint, and engraving. Cory Christiansen

His mixed media works are efforts to answer big questions such as how we came about, what our purpose is, and what our history tells us about ourselves and our future. Christiansen uses conceptual pieces, historical reference, and aesthetic means in his explorations. The character of his work is continually changing based on his perpetual search for innovative technology, novel techniques, and inspiration from mentors, past and present.

Christiansen explains, “One of my favorite Jon Fasanelli-Cawelti quotes is, ‘I've always loved history. It made perfect sense that I would end up being a dinosaur.’ Jon embraced the prehistoric practice of mark making, that basic act of creation, that is innately human and central to personal fulfillment. His enthusiasm, dedication to his art, and indomitable spirit inspired resurrection of my own dinosaur instincts, for which I am eternally grateful.”

Christiansen’s exhibition opens on August 10, 2023 and runs through March 10, 2024. The public is invited to meet the artist during the free reception from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 20th.
2023-10-15 17:00:00 -050010/15/23 @ 10:00 a.m.Muscatine Art CenterMuscatine -

Adam Rake: World Lines

Adam Rake: World Lines

September 9, 2023 – January 7, 2024

Iowa City artist Adam Rake explores the complex ways in which the meaning of a work of art changes over time as technology and culture evolve. To convey this theme, Rake draws on the precedent of historical artworks but filters them through his own unique lens. He utilizes his printmaking experience to distort, alter, and augment the original images into something entirely new. Through these works, he considers the ever-changing relationship between contemporary culture and the work of art.
2023-10-15 16:00:00 -050010/15/23 @ 12:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -

Hey Buddy, I'm Bill

On display now in the Main Library Gallery, University of Iowa Libraries:

Hey Buddy, I’m Bill tells the story of Bill Sackter, the namesake of Wild Bill’s (formerly Wild Bill’s Coffee Shop) in the University of Iowa School of Social Work. From his early life in Minneapolis to his 44-year institutionalization for an intellectual disability to his years of friends and fame in Iowa City, the exhibit shares a glimpse into Bill’s life and legacy. The exhibit also acknowledges some of Iowa’s own history with institutionalization and progress with disability rights, and places Bill’s story in the context of the historic treatment of people with disabilities. The exhibit not only tells how Bill’s life embodied the disability practices and perspectives of his time, but also how the national prominence of his life story helped America make progress toward better understanding and treatment of people with disabilities.

Curated by Jen Knights and Brad Ferrier, the exhibit features artifacts, documents, and ephemera from Bill’s life as well as ways for visitors to contribute stories about their own experiences with disability.

MAIN LIBRARY GALLERY HOURS:

Monday: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Tuesday: 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Wednesday: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Thursday: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Friday: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Saturday: 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Sunday: 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Admission is always FREE.
