Go Deeper Thursdays with Prairiewoods

Go Deeper Thursday is an ongoing personal exploration and deepening in community. This online group began during the pandemic as an opportunity to be in community while physically isolated. Over the years, we have seen many faces and heard many voices—all of us willing to open ourselves in order to “go deeper” in our own consciousness and spirituality. Topics emerge from the conversations and maintain a general focus on our spiritual lives. Convener Ellen Bruckner guides these online conversations on the first and third Thursdays of each month. Registration is required to get the Zoom link, and a free-will offering will be accepted. For more information or to register, contact Prairiewoods at www.Prairiewoods.org or 319-395-6700.

2023-06-15 17:00:00 -05006/15/234:00 p.m.Prairiewoods Franciscan Spirituality CenterHiawatha -

3rd Thursday at Hoover's Presents: Lou Henry Hoover’s White House Years

This is the first of a 3-month ‘Best Of ‘ series of 3rd Thursday programs. This program originally aired in May of 2022.

Lou Henry Hoover’s White House Years

When Lou Henry Hoover moved into the White House on March 4, 1929, she looked forward to using her influence to strengthen the areas that were near and dear to her heart: women’s opportunities; the arts; and private philanthropy. The onset of what we now call the Great Depression challenged Lou’s plans, but she saw new opportunities for serving the nation and remained undaunted.

Lou continued to blaze a trail of achievements that have often been forgotten. She was the first president’s wife to address the nation by radio. She continued the work of updating the White House to accurately reflect its history and documented that work. Lou’s private philanthropy led to the building of a school for children in a remote area of rural Virginia, and she sought out and supported local artisans for a number of special projects.

About the Speaker- Annette Dunlap:

Annette Dunlap has been a North Carolina-based freelance writer for over 30 years. She has written for a variety of publications, including op-eds for the Fayetteville Observer, the Charlotte Observer and The Pilot, in Moore County. She was a freelance reporter for the Asheboro Courier-Tribune, and has been a contributor to inspirational magazines, business publications, and White House History. Annette is the author of Frank: The Story of Frances Folsom Cleveland, America’s Youngest First Lady; The Gambler’s Daughter; and Charles Gates Dawes: A Life. Her biography of Lou Henry Hoover, A Woman of Adventure: The Life and Times of First Lady Lou Henry Hoover, was recently released by the University of Nebraska Press.

Annette has appeared on C-SPAN’s first ladies’ series to discuss Frances Cleveland and Lou Henry Hoover, and was a panelist at the Harding Symposium’s “Modern First Ladies” program in 2015. Her research on Frances Folsom Cleveland inspired the development of the program, “First Ladies and the Politics of Fashion,” which has been broadcast on C-SPAN.

Annette holds a B.A. from the University of Arizona and an M.B.A. from Washington University in St. Louis. She and her husband of 41 years live in North Carolina.

Registration is required to get the Zoom link. Textile Art Exhibit and Artist Talk by Don Dixson

Beginning Sunday, June 18, Upper Room Gallery at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 1340 3rd Ave. SE, will exhibit the textile art of local artist Don Dixson. That morning a reception and artist talk will be held at 10:15 AM in the gallery. The art will be on display through July 30. Gallery patrons should park in the church’s 2nd Ave. parking lot and enter the church building by the left-hand door under the portico. An elevator will ascend directly into the 3rd floor gallery, which is handicap accessible and is open to the public 8 AM-5 PM, Monday through Thursday; 8 AM-Noon, Friday; and 9 AM-Noon, Sunday.

In 2007, Dixson’s long forgotten childhood interest in art was rekindled when he started making quilts for his expanding family of grandchildren, family members and Quilts of Valor. Using hand-dyed fabric and an improvisational piecing technique, he soon assembled his first piece of textile art. He developed a technique of ripping strips of fabrics and assembling them into amazing pieces of unique textile art. Dixson’s fabric selections have expanded to include printed fabrics along with hand-dyed fabrics. He hopes that his art works evoke the warmth and comfort of colorful quilts and that as people bring them into their homes and businesses, that they too will experience that warmth and comfort.

All are welcome to the artist talk and exhibit.
2023-05-25 11:15:00 -05006/18/2310:15 a.m.St. Paul's United Methodist ChurchCedar Rapids
