Artist statement: The musical term “theme and variations” refers to a standard form of composition consisting of a simple melody presented first in its original form and then repeated several times in varying ways with some semblance of the original motif preserved. Visual artists also use this approach. For me, a theme is generally related to the subject matter depicted, but it can also be about the approach to composition or the use of certain materials. For this exhibit, instead of showing the seven or eight (or more) variations on a theme, I have chosen to show just two of a kind.
