This Ability-Holistic Dance

Jhe and Jenni both live with bilateral disabilities and chronic pain and have decided to entitle this form of movement “This Ability’’ as opposed to the term disability. We want to encourage all peoples, especially those who may be in mental and physical pain, to trust themselves through non-judgmental movement using the vehicle of sacred geometry.

The five elements, including their geometric shapes, are:

- Earth- Cube

- Water-Icosahedron

- Air-Octahedron

- Fire-Tetrahedron

- Ether-Dodecahedron

We will be creating a safe space for people of all ages and experiences to be held in community movement and exploration, regardless of their current mental or mobility struggles.
2022-04-15 14:00:00 -05006/25/221:00 p.m.James Alan McPherson ParkIowa City -

Afternoon Nature & Forest Therapy Experience at Prairiewoods

We invite you to join the land at Prairiewoods and certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide Emelia Sautter for a walk with the natural world. Experience Forest Therapy, a sensory-focused practice that invites us to slow down and be present with self and the natural world around us. According to the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy, “Forest Therapy is a practice that supports health and wellness through guided immersion in forests and other environments to promote the well-being of both people and the land. It is inspired by shinrin yoku, the Japanese practice of ‘Forest Bathing.’” Much research has been done on the healing and therapeutic benefits of Forest Therapy. Hundreds of clinical and non-clinical studies show numerous positive effects, including reductions in stress, anxiety, depression, mental fatigue, anger and pain. Improvements include better cognitive functioning, sleep, mood, confidence and creativity. Time with our nature kin also boosts our immune system, regulates blood pressure, improves relationships, increases feelings of gratitude and much more. Please bring a water bottle and dress for being outdoors. The cost is $15, and registration is required by the previous day. For more information or to register, contact Prairiewoods at www.Prairiewoods.org or 319-395-6700.
2022-04-16 15:45:00 -05006/13/222:30 p.m.Prairiewoods Franciscan Spirituality CenterHiawatha -
Walk with an Eco-Ologist at Prairiewoods: Lepidopterology

Join us on the second Tuesday of each month as we Walk with an Eco-Ologist at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha)! Each program will give you the opportunity to learn from a local ‘ologist and dive deeper into specific topics within the field of ecology. Come prepared to walk our trails and, depending on the topic, get a little dirty to get better acquainted with some of our plant and animal kin. We are excited to offer seven programs on the following topics: raptology (birds of prey), agronomy (farming), lepidopterology (butterflies and moths), wild ethnobotany (wild edibles and medicines), ornithology (birds), entomology (bugs) and dendrology (trees). In June, join Lepidopterologist Frank Olsen as we frolic through the prairie and woodland in search of moths and butterflies. Frank will help us to connect the dots between prairie grasses and flowers and how they connect to the charismatic insects that leave us in awe. The cost is $20 per session, and registration is required. Gardening to Ease Stress & Anxiety: A Four-Part Series at Prairiewoods

Now more than ever, we need to return to our gardens. We all know instinctively how we feel better with time outside with wild plants. Intentionally cultivate and grow that connection in this four-part series. Easy-to-understand, scientifically proven benefits will be covered alongside hands-on gardening techniques. Offering many of the benefits of meditation, gardening can be a powerful mindfulness practice. All are welcome, whether we plan on growing an herb container garden in a window, joining a community garden for the first time or growing veggies in our own backyard. Facilitator Jen Kardos of Backyard Abundance will lead this four-part series that begins on March 25 via Zoom and then continues in person in the Green Community Gardens at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha) on April 22, June 3 and June 24, from 4–6 p.m. On March 25, we will talk about the undeniable benefits of time with plants. This will be an easy-to-understand overview of the numerous evidenced-based benefits of time in gardens and nature. Much like our pets, nature can provide the unconditional love and sense of connection we are all seeking. An overview of future classes and easy plants to grow will be included. On April 22, we are invited to bring our worries to the garden. We will experience hands-on all the ways our body's nervous system and immune system self-regulate in the garden. We will practice gardening techniques to nurture mind, body and spirit while developing practical bed preparation, seeding and transplanting skills. On June 3, we will learn coping skills in the garden. We will enhance our plant tending skills while gardening to reduce anxiety, improve mood and sooth the inner-critic. We will learn techniques of thinning and pruning and their applications in our lives. We will even be able to nibble on early harvests in the Garden of Eat’n! The final session on June 24 will be on foraging self-compassion. This is for the perfectionist who desires to embrace the imperfect and experience more joy in the garden (and in life!). Learn the messy ways that nature thrives in the unpredictable world and the delicious abundance it offers in return. We will be foraging and tasting cultivated and wild plants, and noticing their non-judgmental natures. The first session is free, and each in-person session costs $20 (or register for the four-part series for $50). For more information or to register, contact Prairiewoods at www.Prairiewoods.org or 319-395-6700.
2022-04-17 18:00:00 -05006/03/224:00 p.m.Prairiewoods Franciscan Spirituality CenterHiawatha -
